I/me/my/mine

Each person has four forms: I, me, my and mine. This unit puts all four side by side so that you can choose the right one.

Four forms for each person

I etc. (subject) me etc. (object) my etc. + noun mine etc. (no noun)
I know Ffion. Ffion knows me. It's my van. It's mine.
We know Ffion. Ffion knows us. It's our van. It's ours.
You know Ffion. Ffion knows you. It's your van. It's yours.
He knows Ffion. Ffion knows him. It's his van. It's his.
She knows Ffion. Ffion knows her. It's her van. It's hers.
They know Ffion. Ffion knows them. It's their van. It's theirs.

I, we, he and so on come before the verb. me, us, him and so on come after a verb or after a word such as to or with. my, our, his need a noun after them. mine, ours, his do not.

After a friend of use mine, yours and so on: a friend of mine, not a friend of me.

  • I can hear him, but he can't hear me.
  • Send me your photos and I'll send you mine.
  • "Do you remember that woman?" "Yes, I remember her, but I can't remember her name."
  • He was delighted because we asked him to come to the seaside with us in our car.
  • "Where are the boys? Have you seen them?" "Yes, they're in the garden with their cousins."
  • That's my towel. Can you pass it to me, please?
  • "Is this your coffee?" "No, it's yours."
  • She didn't have a pen, so he lent her his.
  • I'm going to the races with a friend of mine on Saturday.
